4. Prepare for Council and Staff consideration guidelines and
information that would lead to the City to participate in the Cool
Cities program with innovative energy solutions that curb global
warming, save tax payer dollars,and create healthier cities.

  • Info on Energy Savings tax incentives for residents
  • List of “In home” energy saving products
    • Water heater blankets
    • CFL’s
    • Caulk on windows
    • Ceiling fans
    • Etc.
  • Partner with bicycle committee to improve bicycle travel in town
  • Improve pedestrian access at metro stations
  • Get MNCPPC to put up lights along trail near metro
  • Create a biodiesel fuel station in town to support municipal vehicles and to sell to private citizens -- sell B20, B80, B100
  • Require all municipal diesel vehicles to use at least B20 (20% biodiesel, remainder petro-diesel fuel)
  • City could collect waste vegetable oil from restaurants and convert into biodiesel
  • Create an E85 station for public and municipal use
  • Require that all municipal vehicles capable of running E85 are filled on it
  • Purchase segues for police in stead of police cars
  • Ask police to reduce how often they idle cars
  • Review purchase of Priuses for city vehicles
  • Require all municipal buildings to have lights off when not in use
  • Require climate control in municipal buildings to keep it warm in summer (say, at least 76 F) and cool in winter (say, at most 68 F)
  • Purchase one CFL for every household in Hyattsville and get Home Depot to give a coupon for more
  • Signing of Mayor’s Agreement with Council approval – Have press conference
  • Assess current carbon emissions
  • Identify people with expertise to assess city emissions and building codes
  • City of Hyattsville to sign up for 100% wind power – get discount for City residents
  • Change all municipal buildings to wind energy
  • Examine lighting levels and design in city to ensure efficient light and avoid over-illumination
  • Install a corn silo

Educational/Outreach Activities: If targeted, these could apply to any charge...
  • Walkathon for helping seniors, families in need
  • Bikathon
  • Educational puppet shows during farmer’s markets/community events
  • Volunteer Services/HEC to reach out to schools to have programs or coordinate current programs – part of curriculum?
  • After school Environmental Education Programs (Univ. of MD volunteers?)
  • Environmental marketing/education/programs on Channel 71
  • Combined skits/plays with Kids or the Art District Residents or Key Community Figures to be broadcast on Channel 71
  • Tip Sheet Mailers (General Education Efforts) – Examples:
    • Decreasing Water Usage
    • Improving Water Quality
    • Reducing Household Waste
    • Decreasing Energy Use
    • Environmental Friendly gardening and lawn care
  • Kids Environmental Corps of Hyattsville
  • Purchase radio time and broadcast Hyattsville information (pod-casts, environmental news, city meetings)
  • Publish Tips on Conservation in the L&T, Reporter, Gazette, etc.
  • Reach out to surrounding communities who also have Environmental Committees for ideas, experience, inspiration, join ventures.
  • Series of forums/education events for residents; example – tips on bicycling to work; how to reduced chemicals around your home; how to compost; how to create a rain garden
  • Create a Hyattsville Environment Mascot
  • City Sponsored Youth “Game” competition (Human Ecology) – Microsoft, etc.
  • Summer/Fall – Movies on the lawn (nature/environmental based)
  • City organized sports events (Human ecology), e.g., Police v. Fire, teens, schools
