I firmly believe that Hyattsville desrves a Lions Club.
I serve as District Governor of Lions Clubs International District 22-C, which encompasses 56 Lions Clubs in the District of Columbia and the Maryland Counties of Montgomery, Prince George’s, Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s. The Hyattsville Lion Club was chartered in March of 1937 and the Club since then raised funds to provide eye exams and glasses to the needy and to help in other areas of need. One of their biggest fundraisers was an annual citrus fruit sale. As with every Lions Club in the world, every penny of profit was used to help people in need. Hyattsville Lions established an enviable record for helping needy persons. The Hyattsville Lions Club had 88 members in 1975. In 1985 the Club still had 65 members and it was considered one of the strongest Clubs in the greater Washington area in terms of their size and good works. In 2001 the Club had 41 members, and by 2005 membership dropped to 20. Since then, additional members either passed away or moved, so that by 2008 the membership dwindled to 12. Each of these remaining stalwart members was over the age of 80, some with physical infirmities. In November, as District Governor, I accepted the resignations of the remaining 12 members, but received permission from Lions Clubs International to maintain the Club with zero membership until I could recruit some new service-minded people. At this point, since the Hyattsville Lions Club exists in name only, the new members may determine such things as when they meet and what sorts of community service projects they would like to undertake. I and the other officers of Lions Clubs International District 22-C stand ready to provide help and guidance to re-establish the Hyattsville Lions Club. If you are interested in being a member, please let me know. Ted Ladd, District Governor Lions of District 22-C tedladd02@aol.com
