Plastic
Prince George’s County collects “yellow bin” recyclables from single-family homes on Thursday or Friday; whichever of those days is your regular solid waste collection day. For questions on recycling, call Prince George’s County at 301-952-7630.
Kema Saibou, Planner for the Prince Georges County Recycling Division responded to some questions I had. Read below!
First, this is a very exciting time for recycling in Prince George’s County. We are currently in the process of making several changes to the way residents of Prince George’s County and its municipalities recycle. The best way to follow the changes in the County’s recycling program is through the County’s web site and press releases which are found at: http://www.goprincegeorgescounty.com/ The anticipated changes will increase the amount of material that can be recycled, and upgrade the sorting to a system called Single Stream recycling. You will soon see changes in the way you place recycling at the curb, and in the way recycling is collected. In addition, the County’s Materials Recycling Facility is improving and will be re open for tours in the fall. You can contact the facility directly at 301-499-1707

- Q. People do not know what to recycle. If it has the triangle on it, they throw it in the recycling bin. What does the County Recycle - 1 & 2's? 3's?
- A. We are still only accepting 1& 2 plastics. This will soon change.
- Q. What happens to the material that is sorted and is not recyclable.
- A. Material that is not recyclable that is sorted at the facility goes to the County Landfill.
- Q. Do you have a color brochure SHOWING pictures of what can and can NOT be recycled?
- A. With the upgrades to the recycling program, new brochures are being produced. You can expect the new publications in the fall.
- Q. Financial - What are the costs per pound of recycling vs. trash?
- A. Cost differs per material, but on average, the costs are about $40/ton for recycling and $49/ton for trash. Due to the processes involved in operating sanitary landfills, landfilling is normally a more expensive process than recycling.
- Q. Education for children - Do you have coloring books or other kinds of outreach to schools that can be used?
- A. We have general recycling and Department of Environmental Resources material that is geared to children however the bulk of our promotional material will be available in the fall. We are designing a rotating library exhibit for children

Why isn't the Oglethorpe Condominium included in the yellow bin recycling program? We throw away TONS of recyclables due to lack of storage and the high cost of pick up. We pay taxes yet are not included in this valuable program. WHY?
