Riverdale Park Farmers Market - My Hyattsville Wiki
Located in our historic town center
  • Great live music every week with award-winning local artists
  • More eggs, Maryland produced organic meats, and farm-raised oysters!!
  • Train displays every week by the RIVERDALE MODEL RAILROADERS!

"Consumers have 10 times as many conversations at farmers' markets as they do at supermarkets—an order of magnitude difference. By itself, that's hardly life-changing, but it points at something that could be: living in an economy where you are participant as well as consumer, where you have a sense of who's in your universe and how it fits together. At the same time, some studies show local agriculture using less energy (also by an order of magnitude) than the "it's always summer somewhere" system we operate on now. Those are big numbers, and it's worth thinking about what they suggest—especially since, between peak oil and climate change, there's no longer really a question that
we'll have to wean ourselves of the current model."

--Bill Mckibben, "Reversal of Fortune: The formula for human well-being
used to be simple: Make money, get happy. So why is the old axiom
suddenly turning on us?"

Springtime Asparagus Soup

serves 4 to 6

1 1/2 lbs asparagus
1 large leek, white part chopped
6 cups vegetable stock or water
1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
1 small yellow onion
2 tablespoons raw white rice
salt and pepper to taste

1. Trim the asparagus into three sections: ends, middles, and tips. Use the bottom ends to make stock, finely chop the middles and set aside, and set aside the tips for garnish.
2. Heat the oil in a soup pot. Add the leek, onion, and rice and saute for about 8 minutes, until the onion is slightly cooked. Add 1 cup of the stock or water, and stew for 10 minutes. Add the chopped asparagus and the remaining stock and simmer partially covered for 12 to 15 minutes. If desired, pass the soup through a food mill or slightly blend to thicken. Add salt and pepper to taste
3. Add the asparagus tips to the soup and cook for until tender, about 4 minutes. Serve.

As one customer recently told us, "Riverdale Park is the fun market!" Each week we offer live music by award winning local artists, kids entertainment, and a wide selection of fresh produce and specialty items sold directly by Maryland farmers. Riverdale Park Farmers Market is a producers only market located close to NE Washington DC. Products include top quality locally grown asparagus, arugula, strawberries, carrots, eggs, cut and root flowers, garlic scapes, jams and jellies, kale, head, leaf and mixed lettuce, spring onions, flower and vegetable plants, radishes, rhubarb, artisan bread and other baked goods, and more, plus local vendors that produce items that complement farm products, like fresh sausages, locally roasted coffee, pickles, pottery, soap, and more. Eat dinner at the market while you shop!

New in 2008, Groff's Content Farm will be providing organic eggs, chicken, turkey, pork, and lamb at our market. Groff's uses no hormones, no antibiotics, and feed their cattle and sheep on green grass and hay only. We will also be welcoming farm-raised mercury free fresh oysters from Circle C Oyster Ranch on May 22.

We will also have biodiesel in Riverdale Park, courtesy of Green Guild Biodiesel, a non-profit biodiesel buyer's club beginning on June 15, 2008.

We look forward to seeing you from May 1 - October 30 on Thursdays from 3pm to 7pm.
