Members of the Hyattsville Wiki,
It seems we are at the crossroads of opportunity and we can choose to build upon all the hard work and experience each of us has put in to help other citizens of Maryland's communities to communicate, not only with each other, but across neighborhoods, municipalities, and counties.
I have received many phone calls from people around the country who are also interested in strengthening their communities and level of involvement in local issues. Whether the calls came from Pottstown, Pa., Albuquerque, N.M., or Riverdale, Md., they all want to know the same thing - how can they can mimic the exemplary work we have so far achieved.
Recently, Jim Groves (moderator), myself (site founder) and Dwight Holmes (Riverdale Park resident) met to discuss the potential for Riverdale Park wiki pages to be incorporated within the Hyattsville wiki site. For Dwight, he wants Hyattsville residents to be aware of what is happening in Riverdale Park, since we are so close geographically and share the ongoing development of the Route 1 corridor. For Hyattsville, this means we can also learn a little bit more about Riverdale Park, whether it is what time the Riverdale Park Farmers Market is open or a proposed City Council ordinance that may impact our border neighborhoods.
The discussion quickly turned to the other municipalities along Route 1 and whether we should offer them a presence on the wiki as well. Since a decision made in Mt. Rainier or even as far away as Greenbelt could impact our traffic patterns, density or even where we choose to go out to eat for dinner.
This also got me thinking about the social network capabilities on the wiki. Whether you have taken advantage of these or not, this site allows you to create a personal profile, send a private message to someone, or comment on any topic. Now imagine if a council member in College Park is curious about the work Hyattsville has done regarding pedestrian safety. Not only can he view what we have done here, he can also contact the stakeholders and ask questions, or offer advice based on his experience.
But it doesn't have to stop here. There are also other communities in Maryland that, while not geographically related to us, may be considering similar policies regarding rental houses or safe city initiatives, for instance. Normally we would only hear about it second hand and have to network through our representatives or friends to get a name and contact. If we open our wiki to other communities we can do a tag search and see what other towns have done in similar situations.
"Whoa...Hold On! Won't this wiki become a jumbled mess?"
With that said, I leave it up to you the members to decide whether we should stay the same, bring in a few communities at a time, or open up the whole enchilada.
Please post your thoughts and concerns in the comments section below and after the discussion subsides or consensus is built we can take the next step. For now, it is just an idea.
Thanks for your consideration.
Chris Condayan

Riverdale Park and Hyattsville have a lot in common - similar houses, people and roads. We even share some of the same streets - where the even side is Hy and the odd side is RP. Some kind of mutual wiki could make a lot of sense.
As a Riverdale Park (RP) resident, I am impressed with Hyattsville’s online community. I have been shy to make comments on this wiki for fear of “butting in.” I would very much welcome an opportunity to add RP to the wiki. I worry that opening it up too large might become a huge amount of work. Perhaps it can be incremental - start with Riverdale Park and see how that goes. Of course, a little up front thought on how it would look if multiple cities and towns were represented might point us in the right direction. (There is http://local.wikia.com which says it is a wiki for towns all across the country, but I am not very impressed by it). As Dwight points out, this is really up to Hyattsville folks. I would not feel snubbed if you wanted to keep it just for Hy. But I would love to give it a try. Thanks Rob Oppenheim |

The thought of opening it up to the entire state sound scary to me. I like the idea that Jason has about there being a grand poobah moderator. How would other areas know how to integrate themselves into the existing wiki without blurring the boundaries too much to the point where the site is muddled confusion? I'm for it as long as there is some check for organizing things.

I think opening up the wiki to other nearby communities especially Riverdale Park is a good idea, but am a little wary of opening it up to the entire state. If the underlying structure is redesigned to allow for expansion, can it be locked down in such a way that when a community is interested in starting a new wiki area, they would have to come to an uber-moderator for permission? Also, how would shared pages like the restaurant reviews page work if the communities are more geographically diverse? If the consensus favors change, I'd be glad to help. -Jason

I was the one from Riverdale Park who brought up with Chris the idea of somehow linking/merging wikis. My thinking was that those of us who live along Route 1 from Mt Rainier to at least College Park share a community that is broader than our respective towns, which tend to be quite small. On the other hand, each of our towns has a proud identity and tradition which we would all want to defend and maintain. So what it seems to me we want is a site that encompasses both -- the broader community interests that link us together, and also discreet space of each of our towns to do their own thing. For example, the restaurant review page can only, I would argue, be good and maintain broad interest if it is area-wide. not many folks even think about the fact that they cross from hyattsville into riverdale park when moving from franklin's to the calvert house. nor should we have to. on the other hand, pages having to do with many issues are and should necessarily be town-specific.
I understand Chris' concern: Should we structure the site now to be, say, a "Route1 Corridor" site, and it takes off and generates participation from all over this area, it's only a matter of time before people from outlying towns would express interest in joining. But each time the structure is changed it's a big headache for Chris or whomever, and all the links to the existing pages would be broken, causing frustration for readers. Thus his desire to have a once-and-for-all redesign now that would be good for a long, long time. Looks like I'm out of room here... |

I'm not sure about all of Maryland, but Riverdale seems like a good idea. The area just off Rte. 1 and 410 seems to have so much potential and importance to the development and future of the Rte. 1 corridor. I'm not sure that 7-Eleven, McDonalds, and Donut Connection are the most inspiring or welcoming institutions for community development and connection. Thanks.
