I'd like to get the ball rolling by introducing the first in a series of Associated Press Style rules. The AP Stylebook and Libel Manual is considered by many to be "the journalist's bible." Since my early days in J-school, I have used it as a reference guide to ensure my writing embodies proper grammar, spelling, punctuation and usage. I belive that all credible news outlets work diligently to ensure consistency throughout their publication and AP Style is one of the most widely used style manuals in the world. You can purchase a copy of the AP Style Manual at most bookstores and online.
Let's start with ABBREVIATIONS AND ACRONYMS: Before a name: Abbreviate the following titles when used before a full name outside direct quotations: Dr., Gov., Lt. Gov., Mr., Mrs., Rep., the Rev., Sen. and certain military designations. Spell out all except Dr, Mr., Mrs. and Ms. when they are used before a name in direct quotations. |

I am planning the first Hyattsville Writers Group meeting to be held Sunday, Feb. 4, 2 p.m. at Franklin's. At the first meeting we can discuss the direction for the group in detail but my vision for it is this: Writers come together and share their writing, goals and accomplishments in a nurturing, supportive environment free of harsh judgment. I propose that we meet once a month. Please come out to Franklin's and join us. But, please feel free to e-mail me at sallybelle75@hotmail.com with thoughts or concerns.
Thanks, Aimee Condayan |

David Rain and I are available for interviews on an effort currently at work in Hyattsville. HBU (Hyattsville Bikers Unite!) is working to make our lovely city more Bicycle and Pedestrian Friendly, and we would like to spread the word.
Please contact me, should you be interested in an interview: Annelbv@yahoo.com Thank you for your consideration. Anne Villacres |

I thought I'd piggy-back on "Bean Soda's" work with the AP Stylebook. I'm a reporter at The Gazette and I get a lot of questions about how I determine which stories to write and how I get sources and information. I thought it might be helpful for folks to know how it works from the inside out.
I guess I'll start with a few parameters about The Gazette for those who read it: * It's a weekly paper so it's harder to get all the updates on stories into print. This is nice, however, because it means reporters can be more picky about what we write and have more room for the good stuff!! *There are something like 25 or 30 editions of The Gazette. There are (about) 14 editions in PG County, one of which is the Hyattsville/Port Towns edition (which I write). I'm it for your city, which means I have to cover as many events and stories as possible to get a well-rounded paper out. *I have 4 editors who read my copy (stories) before they go to print. Each of them can and often do make changes to what I write. Ok, as for how I get story ideas: Well -- I attend as many city council meetings as I can on my beat to get an idea of what city/town officials are working on. This is also a great place to get residents' comments and background information. I also check out city/town websites and make weekly runs into city/town halls for postings and other info. I try to get as much "news" as I can in one paper. Crime, politics and money are the big ones. As for what constitutes "news" -- I'll have to save that for another post or maybe a comment or two from Bean Soda and other writers. |
