I'm a new homeowner in Hyattsville (came from the wilds of College Park). I was drawn here by the presence of many friends, the lure of a really wonderful old (1900) home and the promise of the new developments in the Arts District. I've gotta say...not much seems to be happening down there along Route 1. I'm doing my best to "matronize" the few establishments. But the EYA signage that's fading and torn, as well as the unbelievable horribly road conditions are bringing me down. How are we to present ourselves as "up-and-coming" when our roads are no better than dirt and gravel? Things along the Arts District Route 1 and up Jefferson are so bad now that I slow down to 10mph in places just to keep my teeth in!! Yikes! Does anyone know if/when the city or county are planning on addressing the road conditions?
Also...as an aside...I'm not sure how the Arts District is going to work if there is no street parking along the shops on Route 1. Will the parking all be behind the Route 1 shops? How will drivers-by know that? |

Wow, Bio Pro, really? Do some research on this before you pay those huge prices. This really looks like a scam - http://thesecondsight.blogspot.com/2007/04/more-biopro-madness.html

I recently moved to Hyattsville and took my 12 year old tabby cat to the Hyattsville animal hospital for his yearly checkup. I had a less than positive experience, but other clients in the waiting room praised the place. However, I think they were ALL dog owners, and I certainly got the feeling that the love of dogs is what keeps the hospital afloat. Does anyone have comments on this vet or suggestions for other local vets for cats? Thanks! And BTW, I love Hyattsville so far :)

After a long period of being empty, the old Dunkin donuts (I think that's what it was) re-opened today as SHAGGA COFFEE AND RESTAURANT. Address is 6040 Baltimore Avenue, just north of the 711 and the Lowest Price Gas Station. The "open" sign was lit up and a customer was coming out. Due to the intense morning sun facing them, they have to keep the shades down but they are open. Phone 240-296-3030. Their yellowbook ad says they have bagels, pastries, soups, salads, and sambusas.

I must say the owners are already coming a long way with food and bev. New menu items have been added, along with a collection of organic beers and a variety of wines. The owners couldn't be nicer people, so I am hoping things continue to go well!

Hello Hyattsville! We are currently researching housing options for a pending move to the DC area. We like the looks of the EYA community known as Arts District Hyattsville. How is the community shaping up? Any residents out there (not EYA sales reps) that can give me their opinion regarding the development?

While riding home from work and daycare with the kids yesterday, my children excitingly pointed out to me "Carnies! Carnies!". Alas there is a carnival in town, but no news about it from the local fare. Anyone heard anything about the new carnival? I know last year a group put out flyers and coupons... well needless to say, as a mom of 5, I need all the discounting I can get! LOL. So if anyone knows something (or someone :P) then pass on the news! Happy Carnival Weekend!

I tried this individual and was not satisfied. He only partially completed an initial job I gave him, wanted to be paid in cash for half first and by check for the balance that day, was supposed to write up a proposal which has not yet returned, and has not responded to any of my phone calls. He also does not know anything about plants. Furterhmore, he did some work for my neighbor earlier and they were not satisfied.

While obviously a concern and worth noting, from what I have read, there is not yet any hard core evidence about any of this. Check out the World Health Organization reports - http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs304/en/index.html - In short, here is what they conclude - Considering the very low exposure levels and research results collected to date, there is no convincing scientific evidence that the weak RF signals from base stations and wireless networks cause adverse health effects.
Another link in dispute - http://www.mcw.edu/gcrc/cop/cell-phone-health-FAQ/toc.html#whatsnew This link - http://www.healthgoods.com/education/healthy_home_information/Electromagnetic_Fields/emf_hazardous_health.htm - has some good definitions of the different kinds of electronic fields. They, however, come to the same conclusion as the WHO.

Two friends told me about problems they have noticed:
1. I find crossing Queens Chapel where it intersects with Queensbury to be extremely nerve wracking...you know where the volunteer fire dept. and the Baptist and Lutheran churches are? It doesn't seem like the pedestrian walk signal is long enough to cross that broad expanse of street. I also don't like that there isn't a cross walk on both sides, just the side opposite the fire station. I think that is a state road, but still part of H-ville! 2. The sidewalk problem is a low, brick house at the intersection of Oglethorpe and 41st Avenue (no address on the house, as far as I could see). You can't stay on the sidewalk because of a tree and bushy overgrowth.

Just to let everyone know that Yoga Space offers prenatal yoga and Mommy-Baby yoga (for babies from birth to almost crawling.) I have lived in Hyattsville for over 30 years, but I am new to Hyattsville Wiki. So I don't know if I am breaking any rules by "advertising."
If I am, I apologize. If I am not, you can check out my website at: www.yoga-space.org. Be @ Peace, Douglas |

Are there any plans to fix the sidewalks or connect bike trails BEFORE 2009? I used to walk more until East West Highway got so congested. The back roads are nice but not very fast if you have a schedule to keep. I see some people biking but they look like they are peddling for their lives, to keep from being sideswiped. It's not really fun standing on the EastWest median if you look at all the debris from collisions. What are the near future 2008 plans to encourage fewer cars? Will their be a shuttle bus for locals on Route 1 who are NOT Univ of Md students? Like directly from Route 1 to Ikea or to go over to the Wal-mart or Lowe's in New Carrollton?

Howdy, all. I don't live in Hyattsville, but have always loved the old shingle-style cottage that you can see from Rte. 1 (property records show it was built in 1901). Does anyone know what EYA plans to do with it? I would hate to see another (potentialy) lovely old home torn down. I'm waiting to hear from EYA...

In addition to reusable bags, I use a large insulated ice chest on wheels with a telescoping handle (somewhat like a large carry on luggage cart).
. I throw two blue ice packs in it from my freezer, and it keeps items from spoiling - especially helpful in the summer. However, I find it so convenient that I use it year round. . It is easier to haul stuff because of the wheels and its big (fewer trips to the car to carry it all in). Sometimes its a bit too heavy and I remove a few items and carry them separately. . At first, it was difficult to remember to take along but now its S.O.P. Finding a convenient place to store it was key. . I put the cooler in the shopping cart and take it into the store with me as I shop. Cold and frozen items go directly from the store shelf to the cooler. No chance to thaw etc. Actually, I put frozen items in a double layer - first into a reusable insulated bag with its own blue ice and then that bag goes in the cooler. (Department of Redundancy Department). . I use my cooler a lot and it gets knocked around so I needed a tough exterior. I found just the cooler I wanted (wheels with a tall handle and a hard plastic exterior) at WalMart. Costco sometimes has similar ones (but with a thicker lid that makes it a better insulator but a little more bulky).
